Public Areas
| Throughout the house one will find books, paintings, collections and music reflecting the War Between the States as well as 19th Century culture and manners. Eclectic porcelain collections are placed in all the rooms and include statues from world-renowned Italian sculpture artist Giuseppe Armani, 19th Century handpainted Nippon (Japan), mid-19th and early 20th century lace German Dresden figuines and lamps, French Limoge porcelain, Balleek porcelain from Ireland, St. Louis and Waterford crystal and Gone with the Wind dolls and figurines by Franklin Mint. |
Library
A baby-grand piano adorns the corner bay-window nook of the Library and talented guests are welcome to play. Floor to ceiling book shelves cover one wall surrounding a 18th century fireplace. The library offers a variety of reading materials for any reading interest and includes an extensive civil war library collection. You will find authors such as Stowe, Mitchell, Greeley, Freeman, Dickens, Foote, Catton, Kantor, Chestnut and Grant. The library is decorated with civil war relics and prints including the works of Kuntsler, Gallon, Gnatek and Waterhouse and an 1865 print of the Proclamation of Emancipation.
Dining Room
Breakfast is elegantly served in the formal dining room. A built-in china cabinet (circa 1920) holds precious new and old china, silver and crystal collections used to serve our guests. The dining room magnificantly displays the workmanship of the house in its 10-foot heart pine, handmade french doors, wall beams, original fireplace and flooring. Prior to the War between the States, tables were elaborately set with china and silver to fit every serving need. BelleHavre continues to search for unique pieces to add to its collections.
Parlor
The Ladies Parlor displays a circa 1890 six-piece Victorian parlor set and is surrounded by representations of ladies fashions through time. Fashions are displayed in framed advertisements from mid-19th century Godey's Fashion House including rare Dresden dolls made specifically for Godeys, other Dresden lace figurines are displayed in an antique French vitrine and a unique collection of detailed, hand-crocheted doll dresses from the hoop-skirt period to the Gibson Girl era are showcased in an antique curio. The War also spurred many film-makers from the silent era to the present. Films are offered in the Parlor and range from DW Griffith's Birth of a Nation to Andersonville, many war documentaries, and of course, Gone with the Wind.
